Shani Darden recently announced its minority investment from VMG with hiring of new CEO, Michelle Shigemasa. Michelle was formerly CEO of Murad Skincare, and held senior executive roles at Estee Lauder / Smashbox Cosmetics for 13 years.

The investment will allow the brand to pull more levers more quickly, invest in growth, capabilities and resources. Prior to hiring Michelle, Shani Darden has also hired Ella Lawrence, a veteran of Urban Decay and Drunk Elephant, as CMO, and Lauren Barrett, formerly of Too Faced and Drunk Elephant, as COO/CFO.

How Shani Darden went from backup dancer to skincare founder
Shani Darden started her career as a dancer for the likes of Destiny’s Child and LL Cool J, and was working at a dermatologist’s office when she saw the benefits of using retinol and after retraining as an aesthetician and began creating her own formulas. It was actress and Honest Company founder Jessica Alba who championed Darden’s products and persuaded her to create her own line.
